Who Needs to Get NSFAS Money?

You must fulfil the following requirements in order to be eligible for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme:

  • Everybody who has received funding from SASSA
  • It is imperative to have both email addresses and mobile phone numbers.
  • hold a legitimate ID and be a South African citizen.
  • Be a student enrolled for the first time in TVET or university
  • The annual income of a household cannot be more than R350,000.
  • must fulfil the prerequisites academically in order to be admitted to a TVET institution or university.
  • The yearly household income of those with disabilities shouldn’t be more than R600,000.

Documents Needed for NSFAS Applications

It is necessary for all applicants to submit:

  • A certified duplicate of your identification document.
  • Certified copy of a letter from SASSA
  • A certified copy of each household member’s ID, including that of their parents or legal guardians.
  • a certified copy of your most recent test scores or academic transcript
  • If either of your parents is deceased, please provide a certified copy of the death certificate.
  • If your parents are divorced, please provide a certified copy of the divorce decree.
  • Certified copy of your ID, not older than 3 months A signed and completed consent form.
  • If you are dependent on your parents/guardian/spouse, please provide Certified ID copies of parent/s, guardian, spouse not older than 3 months and Proof of income of parent, guardian or spouse (payslip or appointment letter If you are self-sufficient (no parent/guardian support) please provide: Proof of income (payslip or appointment letter).
  • If you have a disability, please provide a completed and signed Annexure A (if your information is not pre-populated on the portal). If you are an orphan, please provide the completed and signed Declaration Form, Other documents required, if applicable: Retrenchment letter / UIF documentation; Death certificate/s; Divorce decree.

NSFAS Allowance Money

The amounts specified for lodging, stipend, transportation, and educational materials must be in compliance with the most recent DHET regulations.

UNIVERSITY

  • Accommodation
    As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500  per annum
  • Living allowance R15, 000  per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET

  • Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350  per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

What You Will Need To Receive Your NSFAS Allowances Through NSFAS Wallet

  • Your own cell phone and valid SIM card
  • You must sign your NSFAS Bursary Agreement if you are a new student to NSFAS
  • You will not need to withdraw cash to pay your landlord or any registered merchant.
