If a student plans to join a public university or college in 2024, they can now apply for financial aid under the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. The application period is open now and closes on January 31, 2024. To help students from particular economic situations enrol in TVET colleges and the other 26 public schools that only admit students from these backgrounds, the government agency NSFAS offers loans and scholarships. If a student is eligible for financing through the National Student Aid Scheme, they must submit their 2024 applications by the deadline. As scheduled, the NSFAS Portal will close at 11:59 PM on January 31, 2024.

Who Needs to File an NSFAS Application by 2024?

  • South African citizens or permanent residents
  • SASSA grant recipients
  • Applicants whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
  • Persons living with disabilities whose combined gross household income is not more than R600 000 per year.

Who Cannot Apply for NSFAS 2024

  • Students who have completed a previous qualification.
  • Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.

Students who had previously applied were accepted and also given financial aid. As long as they finish their homework and receive passing grades in every subject, they will receive financial assistance for the whole time they are in school.

 NSFAS Allowances 2024

According to the most recent DHET standards, the funds allocated for housing, stipend, transportation, and educational materials must match.

UNIVERSITY

  • Accommodation
    As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500  per annum
  • Living allowance R15, 000  per annum
  • Book allowances R5200 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET

  • Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
  • Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
  • Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
  • Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350  per annum
  • Transport R7000 per annum
  • Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

Submission of NSFAS Application Document

NSFAS Online Application 2024–2025 Requires the Following Documents

  1. photocopy of your Identity Document.
  2. photocopy of a SASSA letter
  3. photocopy of the ID document of each household member including parents or legal guardian.
  4. Certified copy of your latest academic transcript or exam results
  5. If either of your parents is deceased, please provide a certified copy of the death certificate.
  6. If your parents are divorced, please provide a certified copy of the divorce decree.

 NSFAS Application Steps In 2024

You must submit an NSFAS application by following the comprehensive instructions provided below.

  • Go to www.nsfas.org.za, the official NSFAS website, to get started.
  • Find and pick the “myNSFAS” option from the menu on the right side of the page.
  • Use this link to create your “myNSFAS” account: https://my.nsfas.org.za
  • Use your ID number, which doubles as your username, to log in to your account.
  • Locate and select the “Apply” tab to start your application after logging in.
  • Complete every field with the requested personal information.
  • Go ahead and upload and attach the supporting documents that are required for your application.
  • Submit your application at the end to have it thoroughly reviewed and evaluated.

On October 2023, the NSFAS online application for the subsequent academic year will become active. Only on the NSFAS application opening date are applicants able to see and submit award applications.
