What Are University and TVET College NSFAS Eligibility Criteria
Nsfas provided the following information regarding academic eligibility for TVET college students and university students, respectively:
- As of 2024, continuing university students must obtain a progressive course credit pass rate of 55%, while First Time Entering Students (FTENs) must achieve a course credit pass rate of 50%.
- For continued NSFAS funding, returning university students must fulfil ongoing requirements for academic eligibility.
- The N+ Rule for students attending distant universities will be reevaluated starting in 2024, and the academic progression requirements will gradually rise from 55% to 60%.
- TVET college students studying occupational Programmes can only be funded for the cost of tuition for the duration of the qualification and may qualify for allowances ONLY if in simulated training.
- TVET college graduates will be funded for a university undergraduate qualification regardless of the benefit that they would have derived from the application of the N+ rule at a TVET college level. (On the condition they did not exceed the TVET N+ Rule)”
Applications for 2024 Nsfas funding close on 31 January 2024 at midnight; prospective students have been urged to submit their applications to avoid disappointment.

- Accommodation
As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence) - Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
- Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
- Book allowances R5200 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences
TVET
- Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
- Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
- Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
- Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
- Transport R7000 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum
