Important differences between FET and TVET colleges

  •  FET institutions may provide more specialised, time-constrained programmes that specifically prepare students for particular job roles. TVET colleges, on the other hand, frequently offer a more comprehensive educational experience, enabling students to develop a wide skill set that can open doors to numerous professional possibilities.
  •  While TVET institutions have a more thorough approach that incorporates technical training and academic knowledge, FET colleges primarily concentrate on vocational education.

Advantage Of FET College

  • FET Schools Providing a Solid Foundation

A subgroup of educational institutions in South Africa that provide a variety of vocational and occupational programmes is known as FET, or further education and training. These institutions provide students looking for specialised skills and training to enter the workforce or improve in their jobs after completing their basic education.

FET institutions provide a variety of programmes in subjects including

  1. business,
  2. management,
  3. hospitality, and engineering.

These programs are designed to equip students with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required for specific job roles. FET colleges typically offer National Certificate (Vocational) courses, National N-Diplomas, and other specialized qualifications.

Benefits of TVET Colleges

  • TVET Colleges Emphasizing Practical Expertise

As opposed to FET institutions, TVET colleges, or Technical and Vocational Education and Training colleges, have a wider focus. TVET colleges place a strong emphasis on technical abilities as well as theoretical knowledge across a range of industries. Here, the focus is on giving students a comprehensive education that prepares them for both immediate employment and future academic endeavours.

A wide range of programmes are available at TVET colleges, including classic trades like

  1. plumbing,
  2. electrical work, and carpentry
  3. information technology,
  4. healthcare, and
  5. multimedia.

These institutions are driven by the goal of producing well-rounded professionals who are not only adept in their chosen fields but also possess a solid understanding of the underlying principles that drive their industries.

Who Must Apply for Public TVET College Bursaries

Public colleges that get funding and subsidies from the state are known as TVET colleges. Thus, assuming they fulfil the other criteria, students attending TVET Colleges are qualified for support from NSFAS.

The following NSFAS requirements apply to TVET students:

  3. Must be admitted/received a firm offer for enrolment in a College
  4. Must be in need of financial assistance
  5. Applicants will qualify if they fall within the maximum threshold of up to R350 000 of combined gross family income per annum
  6. Returning students must demonstrate proven and accepted academic performance (academically deserving) in line with the College’s progression policy or the progression prescriptions of the Bursary Rules and Guidelines (whichever is higher)
  7. Must not be enrolling for a qualification that duplicates previous learning that was state-funded
