What Are The Points Required For NSFAS

The percentage of course credits a student earns during the academic year will be used to calculate the academic progression requirements. The requirements for academic progression criteria will be gradually aligned by institutions and NSFAS.

The following standards are applied to university students: NSFAS financial aid recipients must continue to meet certain academic success requirements in order to be eligible for financial help.

• As of 2023 First Time Entering Students (FTEN) must achieve a course credit pass rate of 50% for their previous academic term.
•  Continuing university students must as of 2023 achieve a course credit pass rate of 55% for their previous academic term.
• The criteria are applied as follows to students in TVET Colleges:
•  A bursary may only be awarded to students progressing to the next NC (V) level if they passed at least 5 subjects in the previous NC (V) level.
•  A bursary may only be awarded to students progressing to the next Report 191 level if they passed a minimum of 3 subjects in the previous N-Level.
• Academic progression criteria requirements for continuing students studying occupational programmes will be determined by TVET Colleges, and results shared with NSFAS.

Once a student is rejected for further funding due to not meeting the NSFAS academic eligibility criteria requirements, the student is no longer eligible for financial aid from NSFAS.

What Are The Approved Qualification To Apply For NSFAS

 The University and TVET Colleges funded qualifications are approved by the NSFAS and implemented in conjunction with these eligibility criteria.

• University-approved funded qualifications are qualifications that have been accredited by the Council on Higher Education and are registered on the NQF with the institution listed as the originator. These qualifications fall into two broad categories each of which have the following attributes on the NQF.
• Certificate qualifications are qualifications that have been registered on the NQF, on NQF Level 5 and have a qualification type of Higher Certificate or National Higher Certificate.
•  Undergraduate qualifications are qualifications that have been registered on the NQF on:
• NQF Level 6 and have a qualification type of Advanced Certificate, Diploma (minimum course credits of 240), Diploma (minimum course credits of 360) or National Diploma, or
•  NQF Level 7 or 8 and have a qualification type of National First Degree, or National First Degree (minimum course credits of 480).
